Does My Child Need Dental Sealants? Everything Charlotte Parents Should Know

If you've ever sat across from a dentist who mentioned "sealants" and nodded along without fully understanding what that meant, you're not alone. Dental sealants are one of the most effective and underutilized preventive tools available for children — and a surprisingly large number of parents have never had them properly explained.

Here's the full picture, including what they are, who benefits most, and what to expect at your child's appointment.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth — the molars and premolars. These surfaces have deep grooves and pits where food particles and bacteria collect. Even thorough brushing often can't clean these areas well, especially in younger children whose fine motor skills are still developing.

The sealant fills in and smooths out those grooves, creating a barrier that prevents bacteria and food from sitting on the enamel. According to the CDC, sealants prevent about 80% of cavities in the back teeth in the first two years and continue protecting against 50% of cavities for up to four years.

What Age Should My Child Get Sealants?

The general recommendation is to apply sealants as soon as the first permanent molars come in — typically around age 6 — and again when the second molars emerge, usually around age 12. The earlier the sealant is applied to a new tooth, the more protection it provides during the highest-risk cavity years.

Adults can also benefit from sealants on teeth that don't yet have fillings or decay, but the procedure is most commonly used and most impactful for children between ages 6 and 14.

Does It Hurt? What's the Procedure Like?

No needles, no drilling, no pain. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth. We clean and dry the tooth, apply a mild acidic gel briefly to help the sealant bond, rinse and dry again, and then paint the sealant directly onto the surface. A special light cures it in seconds. That's it. Most kids describe it as feeling like nothing.

Are Sealants Covered by Insurance?

Most pediatric dental plans cover sealants for children under 14 on permanent molars. Coverage varies by plan, so we always verify your specific benefits before the appointment. If you're unsure whether your plan covers sealants, call us and we'll check for you before you even schedule.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

With proper care, sealants can last up to 10 years. We check them at every routine cleaning visit and can reapply if any have worn down or chipped. Sealants don't require any special maintenance — your child brushes and flosses as normal.
