How to Use Your Dental Insurance Before It Resets

We're now at the midpoint of 2026 — which means if your dental insurance plan runs on a calendar year, roughly half of your annual benefits have already expired unused. For most people, that represents several hundred dollars in preventive care that's simply gone.

This isn't the insurance company's fault. It's a quirk of how most plans work — and most patients simply don't think about it until December, when every dental office is fully booked and the pressure of a deadline creates a scramble. Here's how to avoid that entirely.

How Dental Insurance Benefits Actually Work

Most dental insurance plans include an annual maximum — typically between $1,000 and $2,000 — that resets every January 1. Unlike health insurance, dental benefits do not roll over. If you don't use them, they expire. Your plan also likely includes: two covered cleanings per year (preventive at 100%), X-rays once per year, and a deductible that applies to restorative work like fillings and crowns.

If you had your first cleaning in January or February, you're due for your second cleaning right now. That visit is fully covered under most plans and generates no out-of-pocket cost for you. Not scheduling it is effectively giving money back to your insurance company.

What to Check Right Now

First, call us. We verify your benefits before every appointment and can tell you in minutes what you have remaining, what's covered, and what any pending treatment would cost you out of pocket. You don't need to log into a confusing insurance portal or decode an Explanation of Benefits document. We do that work.

Second, think about whether there's any treatment you've been putting off. A filling you've been meaning to schedule. A crown that was recommended last year. A wisdom tooth situation that hasn't resolved itself. June and July are ideal months to address these — you've already met your deductible, your remaining maximum can absorb the cost, and you'll go into the second half of the year with nothing outstanding.

Pre-Book December Now

This sounds premature, but we mean it sincerely: if you want a December appointment, book it in June. Every year without exception, December is our most requested month as patients rush to use expiring benefits. We have limited availability and fill up weeks in advance.

By booking both your mid-year and year-end appointments now, you guarantee your spot, lock in your coverage window, and eliminate the end-of-year scramble entirely.

Uninsured? We Have Options.

If you don't have dental insurance, don't let that stop you from scheduling care. We offer transparent pricing, flexible payment plans, and in-house options that make care accessible regardless of your coverage status. Ask us when you call — we'll find a path that works.

Call us at +1 980 498 1037 or book at davislakedental.com. We'll verify your benefits and find you the right appointment. 8505 Davis Lake Pkwy AB3, Charlotte, NC 28269.
